FAQ
Questions we hear — usually right before someone finally emails us
Whether you're starting fresh or wondering if your current site could do more for you — here's the honest version. (No judgment if the website has been on the back burner. We get it.)
What We Do
What does Luker Studio actually do?
We design and build custom websites for small businesses, nonprofits, and community organizations. We start by listening — your goals, your people, your brand — then turn that into a site that feels clear and welcoming online. Strategy, design, build, hosting, and ongoing care: we handle the web side so you can stay focused on the work that actually matters to you.
Do you build custom websites or use templates?
Everything is custom, from scratch. No templates, no pre-built themes, no “pick a skin and hope for the best.” Your site is built for your audience and your story — lean where it should be lean, roomy where it needs room. That usually means better performance, better accessibility, and a site that can grow with you without fighting the layout.
What kind of organizations do you work with?
Small businesses, nonprofits, local service providers, and community organizations — people who are brilliant at what they do and would rather not become part-time web managers. If you run the bakery, lead the nonprofit, or show up for your neighbors every week, we’re here to make the website feel as cared-for as the rest of your work.
Do you do e-commerce or complex web applications?
We focus on custom brochure-style sites for small businesses and nonprofits, including simple online stores or donation flows when you need them. We don’t build large e-commerce platforms or heavy web applications on our Site Care plan. Not sure if you fit? That’s what the free conversation is for — no awkward sales pitch, we promise.
Cost & Timeline
How much does a website cost?
We put our numbers right on the website because surprises aren't fun. Starter is $1,650 one-time plus $179/month for hosting and maintenance, with up to 4 content sections. Standard is $2,800 one-time plus $179/month, with up to 7 sections; extra work is billed at $139/hour. Already have a site? Site Care is from $1,299 one-time plus $179/month — migration of up to 10 sections plus DNS, SSL, and security setup once you're on our managed hosting.
What does the monthly hosting and maintenance fee cover?
The $179/month fee covers managed hosting, SSL renewal, weekly security updates and monitoring, monthly performance checks, form and link checks, and search health monitoring. It also includes 1 hour of your content changes per month (photos, copy tweaks, that sort of thing). Need more in a busy month? Additional time is $139/hour, only when you need it. Security patches and behind-the-scenes maintenance on our side don't eat into your hour — that's on us.
Maintenance work on our side — security patches, performance tune-ups, the unglamorous stuff that keeps your site healthy — doesn't count toward your 1 hour. That's on us. We'd rather not nickel-and-dime you over the small things.
How long does it take to build a website?
Most Starter projects take about two weeks from kickoff to launch. Standard can run a little longer when there are more sections or moving parts. We’ll give you a clear timeline up front and keep you in the loop — no mystery phases or “we’ll get back to you someday.”
Working Together
I already have a website. Can you work with that?
Yes — that’s what Site Care is for. We can migrate up to 10 content sections, help with DNS and SSL, and tighten security once your site lives on our managed hosting. If you need a full redesign or features beyond migration, we’ll talk through a custom project that fits your goals.
What do you need from me to get started?
We’ll walk you through it. It helps to have a rough picture of your goals, any brand bits you love (logo, colors, fonts), content you already have, and examples of sites that feel like “you.” Don’t have all of that yet? That’s normal. We’ll figure it out together.
I am not technical. Is that a problem?
You don’t need to speak “tech” with us — ever. We explain things in plain language and handle the behind-the-scenes work. Our job is to make this feel calm and doable, not like another homework assignment on your already-full plate.
Can I update the website myself after it is built?
You send us updates — new photos, revised copy, fresh events — and we make them happen as part of your monthly care time. One less login to remember, and your site stays secure and consistent. (Yes, DIY editing sounds convenient. In practice it often means more risk and more “why does this look broken?” moments. We’d rather spare you that.)
Technical & Ongoing
Will my website be accessible and ADA compliant?
Yes. Accessibility is built in from the start, following WCAG 2.2 AA. That means people who use screen readers, keyboards, or other assistive tech can actually use your site — which is the right thing to do and simply good design.
Do you handle SEO?
Every project includes solid search fundamentals — clear structure, thoughtful titles and descriptions, fast pages, and the housekeeping that helps search engines understand you. Monthly care includes search health monitoring. If you want a deeper ongoing SEO strategy, we can talk about what would actually help your organization.
What happens after my site launches?
After launch, your site moves into ongoing care: weekly security updates and monitoring, monthly performance audits, form and link checks, and search health monitoring. Your 1 hour per month for content updates is there when you need it, with additional time available at $139/hour if life gets hectic. We're still here as things grow. We're here as you grow — same studio, same care.
Still wondering about something?
Every project starts with a conversation. Tell us about yours — we'll answer whatever you need, no obligation, no awkward pitch.
